On a closed curve the ramp mirrors out and back, so the ends meet and
neighbours along the chain stay close in colour. Auto contrast raises
the cycle count to separate adjacent strands, at the cost of repeating the
palette; it is off by default because a single pass keeps colour meaningful.
Hue turns quickly so neighbouring strands differ, while lightness rises
steadily from start to finish. Because lightness never repeats, no two
positions on the curve share a colour.
